Given the very promising start to the snow season I am keen to get amongst it.
I am proposing two possible routes, and we'll decide on Sunday morning which route is likely to have the best conditions.
Both routes involve get the Kosciusko Chairlift up from the Thredbo village ($50 for a backcountry day pass).
Plan A is to head west from the top of the chairlift towards South Ramshead, where we will ski down off the western face and then decide which slopes around the creek look most fun. I’ve chosen this area for a few reasons including that it’s relatively high altitude compared with other options, so with luck the snow base should be thicker than lower down.
Plan B is to ski to the north east, initially through the resort, on our way to the Twin Valleys area. We will go this way if we think the snow conditions may be better on a south facing slope.
It is possible that at this early stage of the season there will be hazards poking out of the snow, so we will need to keep an eye out.
THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP. BEGINNER TRIPS WILL HAPPEN SOON, ONCE THERE IS A BIT MORE SNOW.
PLEASE NOTE: The club's alpine touring skis are temporarily offsite being repaired and waxed, and will not be available for this trip. The skis will be back in the gear store in time for trips next weekend.
To join this trip, you must have touring experience, and you must bring gear that you are confident in using. This could be alpine touring skis, telemark skis or a splitboard, but if this is your first time using that gear then this is not the trip for you.
If you sign up you are confirming that:
- You have been ski touring in the backcountry before
- You have your own gear, or you will organise to rent gear beforehand
- You have used this kind of gear before, and you can ski down blue runs on that gear with some confidence
- You understand what you need to bring for a day of ski touring, including ski gear but also appropriate layers, food and water etc.
I will wait until Friday before making a firm decision about numbers, based on whether we have one or two cars' worth of people. One possible scenario would be one car with people who already have gear, and one car with people who want to hire gear in Cooma or Jindabyne (and would therefore leave a bit earlier).
There will not be a pretrip for this trip. I will provide further details on Friday to firm up our plans and confirm numbers, either by email or WhatsApp.
